This whole isolation triggered me to finally try hard and make something I always wanted to make in my life since I was a kid, a retro platformer game! 😍

Because you never know what happens tomorrow, there may or may not be another opportunity in the future.

So I'm finally on it and also I want to use this project to improve my pixel art skills and maybe even learn something new about coding 🀯

Usually none of my games ever get finished so I'm just working on them until I lose the interest... This one though still looks like there are things I want to add to it... 😏

Updates

This list is upside down, so we get the latest things first. Any date is clickable, so you can check out any of these updates if you like!

June 8, 2020 added interactions between items and the world (like dropping a flower on dirt will grow grass)

June 2, 2020 added sneaking (hold down to sneak) and restored the climbing animation

June 1, 2020 added scrolling (thanks TK for the idea)

June 1, 2020 better player animations (now the player sprite is composed from separate body parts instead of being a solid sprite)

May 22, 2020 added the preferences button [≑]

May 21, 2020 added walking between multiple screens/rooms, doors (press up or down to enter) and picking up items

May 19, 2020 Added onscreen gamepad. Now we can play it just by touching the screen! πŸ˜πŸ‘‰πŸ“±

May 19, 2020 Added decorative frames and color tinting (trippy!)

May 18, 2020 Added one-sided platforms (down+jump to jump off a platform), animated the player sprite.

May 17, 2020 Added platformer physics and a pixel font. It took me quite a while to come up with proper platformer physics but I finally made it! And all without using any kind of physics engines that make games look like physics simulations instead of proper platformer games.

May 16, 2020 Added Hyllian's XBRZ video filter (turns pixels into a smoother cartoony style), added music (only plays in fullscreen – click/tap on the screen to switch to fullscreen).

May 15, 2020 Added basic support for tilemaps.

May 15, 2020 First version, just drew a couple of sprites and also added support for gamepad. I finally learned how to use the gamepad in a browser game, so I added support for it 😁

What do you think? πŸ˜„

Even your pixelart is beyond great. Animation of main character is so nice... such cute feather, hat, eye and nose! Or duck movement and idea about using flower to plant grass... . It is strange to return again and again to Harvey when he is just few pixels wide, but for some reason I like to do so from time to time and watch him walk around in his small but happy world :-)
It's just a test map, sadly I ran out of admiration for this style way too quickly. Sadly I'm alone in this world of 8 billion people, no matter what I start doesn't seem to ignite any interest in anyone and I run out of my own burst of inspiration really quick. I solved this by sticking to very short stories and separate pictures, but a longer bigger project seems objectively impossible.

With this particular game it was fun to perfect the animations and I mainly learned how to make a platformer game without using any game engines. It was originally supposed to be something minecraftish and my goal was to let him make a cake using the same recipe as in Minecraft, but the reaction of few friends who seemed bored and burdened when I tried to show them the demo just made me stop half way.

Iam at loss why there aren't thousand people adoring your art every day... Then again I maybe know your feelings, you do something for years and at time much better (thanks to help of other people) than others projects and yet, others worse get all the visitors, money, fame... always. Because they focus on their own promotion and self image rather than actual substance. They even steal and then rewrite reality by repeating lies again and again and in years everyone forgets truth.

And when I look around many very good creators, not only artists barely make living thanks to few supporters while total generic trash is promoted and showered in gold.

And it is getting icreasingly worse, you are told and shown "whats good" and whats good is determined by some Ai algo which is designed to make most money. And of course you do most money by showing and promoting something so simple and dull "everyone" can like. Or is currently pushed by some "Dr. Evil" corporation conglomerate. There is almost no room for exceptionally good stuff... even movies are all the same now. To be famous you must be average and generic BUT promote yourself like madman. :-(( do clickbaiting and play on simple dumb peoples emotions by doing something seemingly outrageous but not so much as mainstream news can still write about - like showing your naked boobs somewhere.

Your art is pure and honest, thats why I love it so much. To do game even this simple without framework as sideproject is mindblowing! Idea, graphics!!! I would love to play finished game, but do not want to set you on hard rocky road and be only admirer at the end, that would not be right.
But maybe with some yt gameplay videos and "buzz" under similar game threads more fans would appear, who knows.

As a child I loved this game, didn't played for many many years, but it had same "playful happy" feeling as your demo. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-woVCWk0ghQ&t=154s

Thanks again very MUCH for reply, I will do my very best to bring you some worthy inspiration in comments without pouring in too much of my own personality which I know is at times sadly too pushy :-(
